The abolition of the tax on newspapers in 1855 saw the birth of the first Retford,
Worksop, Isle of Axholme and Gainsborough News. It became bi-weekly in 1877 and
continued with Tuesday and Friday paid-for until 1988 when the Friday newspaper
changed its title to the Gainsborough Standard, but the midweek News was retained. In
1998 the News became a free edition and in 2002 its publication date was changed
to a Friday to meet the needs of advertisers. The Standard changed to a Thursday
and both newspapers continue to flourish. Sales for the Standard are consistently
increasing while the News coverage has been expanded to cover important Lincoln
fringe villages. After a long period of neglect and depression, Gainsborough is
a town on the up through a series of regeneration measures. New businesses are
moving into the area and property prices are booming. |
